Recap: Minnesota vs. Michigan

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Zak Irvin led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-8 from 3-point range, as the Michigan Wolverines held on to win their Big Ten Conference opener over the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena, 63-60.

Nik Stauskas poured in 14 points and dished out seven assists for Michigan (9-4, 1-0 Big Ten), while John Horford also scored 14 and hauled in nine rebounds.

For Minnesota (11-3, 0-1), Andre Hollins and Malik Smith netted 12 points apiece, while Elliot Eliason tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Neither team shot greater than 40 percent from the floor in the back-and-forth first half, but Minnesota attempted six more field goals than did Michigan and took a 30-28 lead into the break.

The Wolverines improved to 52.6 percent from the field after halftime, decisively better than the Gophers' 40.9 percent. A Horford bucket with 4:15 left gave Michigan a four-point lead, and it would never again relinquish that advantage.

In a game that consisted of nine ties and 10 lead changes, Michigan's bench outscored Minnesota's reserves, 29-23.
