Recap: Vanderbilt vs. Georgia State
Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Damian Jones scored 19 points off the bench to carry the Vanderbilt Commodores to an 86-80 win over the Georgia State Panthers in a non-league battle at Memorial Gym.
Jones connected on 7-of-8 shots from the field and had a team-high seven rebounds as well for Vanderbilt (1-0). Rod Odom also scored 19 points and Eric McClellan added 18.
Ryan Harrow scored a game-high 27 points to pace Georgia State (1-1). R.J. Hunter added 21 points, Curtis Washington (13 points, nine rebounds) nearly had a double-double and Devonta White tacked on 11 points and five assists.
Despite shooting 56 percent from the floor, while holding Georgia State to just 42.9 percent shooting, in the first period, the Commodores clung to a 35-34 lead at halftime. The Panthers made good on 5-of-13 shots from beyond the arc to remain in striking distance.
The Commodores were able to separate themselves in the final 20 minutes by connected on 55.2 percent from the floor, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Panthers shot a solid 48.5 percent from the field but failed on all but one of their nine attempts from 3-point range.
Led by three 3-pointers from Dai-Jon Parker, the Commodores had a 30-18 edge from beyond the arc. Georgia State won the rebounding battle (34-30).Game Notes
