Recap: Texas-El Paso vs. Tennessee
Nassau, Bahamas (SportsNetwork.com) - McKenzie Moore scored 19 points, one of four starters in double figures, as the Miners of Texas-El Paso grabbed a 78-70 win over the Tennessee Volunteers during the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.
Before fouling out, John Bohannon generated 16 points, followed by Julian Washburn and Justin Crosgile with 12 points apiece for the Miners (4-2) in the triumph.
The Volunteers (3-2) were paced by Jordan McRae who tallied 22 points, while Josh Richardson and Jarnell Stokes both dropped in 13 points, the latter clearing a game-high 14 rebounds in the setback.
Tennessee led by four points about five minutes into the first half, but the team shot only 28.1 percent from the floor in the period, including 2-of-11 behind the 3-point line, en route to a 36-28 deficit at the break.
UTEP went from shooting 55.2 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes of action to 61.9 percent following the intermission, giving them enough separation for the eight-point decision.
The Vols easily won the battle of the boards, 46-28, but at the same time turned the ball over 15 times.
The Miners are now set to battle Iowa in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday, while Tennessee goes up against Xavier.Game Notes
