Recap: Kentucky vs. Georgia
Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Harrison scored a team-high 15 points to help the No. 14 Kentucky Wildcats to a 79-54 rout of the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
Julius Randle tallied 14 points with nine rebounds, James Young added 13 points, and Willie Cauley-Stein totaled eight points, six blocks, and six steals for Kentucky (15-4, 5-1 SEC), which has won three straight since losing an 87-85 overtime thriller to Arkansas.
When speaking of Cauley-Stein's performance, Kentucky coach John Calipari said, "I told you, he was unbelievable in practice, and he was in a totally different frame of mind, and he performed."
Cauley-Stein had five blocks and five steals combined in the previous five conference games.
Brandon Morris paced Georgia (10-8, 4-2) with 15 points and Marcus Thornton was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points. Georgia had its two-game winning streak snapped in defeat.
"Well that was an SEC battle in which they whooped us," said Georgia coach Mark Fox. "We couldn't slow them down enough to get back in it and just couldn't score enough today to hang in there and make it a threat long enough."
A Charles Mann free throw helped the Bulldogs to an 8-6 lead six minutes into the contest and Kentucky followed with a 19-2 surge. Young made a dunk and a three on successive possessions and Randle knocked down just his second 3- pointer of the season as the Wildcats led 25-10 with under six minutes to play in the half.
Morris then capped a 9-3 run with a trey to cut the deficit to 10 with 1:25 remaining and Willie Cauley-Stein knocked down a pair of free throws to conclude the scoring in the first half with Kentucky leading 34-22 at the break.
Georgia got back into the game early in the second half as Mann made two at the line to cut the halftime deficit to six just before the first media timeout.
Kentucky proceeded to run off seven straight points to push the lead back to double digits, but the Bulldogs trailed by as little as eight a couple of minutes later after a three-point play from Donte' Williams.
That would be as close as Georgia would get as Cauley-Stein made back-to-back buckets to give the Wildcats a 58-39 lead with 8:10 left and the lead grew to a game-high 27 in the closing minutes.Game Notes
