Recap: South Carolina vs. LSU
Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarell Martin came off the bench and tallied 18 points, six rebounds and five steals in 21 minutes, helping lift the LSU Tigers to a 71-68 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in Southeastern Conference action at Colonial Life Arena.
Johnny O'Bryant III and Jordan Mickey chipped in with 13 points apiece as the Tigers (10-4, 1-1 SEC) snapped a two-game slide.
Sindarius Thornwell led all scorers with 25 points for the Gamecocks (7-8, 0-2). Tyrone Johnson scored 15 off the bench, and Brenton Williams finished with 11 points in the loss.
The first half featured five ties and 12 lead changes, although it was LSU that claimed a 32-30 halftime lead.
LSU led by as many as 14 with 5:45 to play. However, South Carolina put together a 9-0 spurt to trim the margin to 64-59 on a jumper by Thornwell with just over two minutes to play. It was still a four-point game with 25 seconds to play, but Mickey came up with a big steal in the final seconds to seal the win for South Carolina.
Both teams committed 19 turnovers and struggled to get into an offensive rhythm, although the Tigers utilized their size to a key 42-32 rebounding advantage, including a 16-7 edge on the offensive glass.Game Notes
