Recap: LSU vs. Rhode Island
Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gilvydas Biruta tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Rhode Island Rams beat the LSU Tigers, 74-70, in a non-conference tilt at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
E.C. Matthews led the Rams (9-6) with 21 points, adding nine rebounds. Xavier Munford scored 17 points with six rebounds and Biggie Minnis added six assists. Rhode Island has won two in a row and three of its last four.
Jordan Mickey paced the Tigers (9-3) with 21 points. Andre Stringer scored 13 points with five steals, seven assists and six rebounds. Johnny O'Bryant III chipped in 11 points as the team had a five-game win streak snapped.
URI played a strong first half, making 55.6 percent of its field goal tries and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The Rams held a 36-30 lead at intermission. LSU only shot 40.6 percent from the field but managed to shoot five more field goal attempts because of URI's eight turnovers.
The Rams struggled in the second half, making just 35.5 of their shots from the floor. The Tigers didn't shoot much better by making 43.8 percent of their field goal attempts and 2-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. An O'Bryant III layup with 1:24 got the Tigers within one point, but URI would score the final three points of the game to secure the win.
URI dominated the glass, 46-32, in order to help the squad overcome 22 turnovers.Game Notes
