Recap: George Mason vs. Towson
Fairfax, VA (Sports Network) - Jerrelle Benimon scored a game-high 31 points as the Towson Tigers captured an 85-81 overtime win against the George Mason Patriots in a Colonial Athletic Association battle at the Patriot Center.
Benimon, who shot 10-of-14 from the floor, added seven rebounds and four assists for the Tigers (17-13, 12-5 CAA) as they logged their third straight win and the seventh in the last eight outings overall. Marcus Damas accounted for 23 points and nine rebounds, while Bilal Dixon pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.
The Patriots (17-12, 10-7 CAA) had four starters score in double figures led by Jonathan Arledge with 17 points, followed by Bryon Allen with 14. Having even more of an impact was Erik Copes who tallied 13 points and collected a game-high 15 rebounds as the squad had a two-game win streak snapped. Corey Edwards contributed 10 points and five steals in the losing cause.
Shooting an impressive 54.5 percent from the floor, including 7-of-12 behind the 3-point line, the Tigers led by double digits in the first half, carrying a 46-36 advantage into the break.
In the second half Towson dipped to just 1-of-6 on the perimeter and converted only 14-of-23 at the free-throw line, allowing George Mason to remain close enough for Anali Okoloji to knock down a 3-pointer in the waning moments to knot the score at 79-79 and send the meeting into overtime.
In the extra session Edwards put the hosts up by two with a layup two minutes in, but those proved to be the only points of the period for the Patriots as they suffered the four-point home loss.
Towson, which turned the ball over 18 times on the night, shot 49.2 percent from the floor in the contest.Game Notes
