District One City Councilman Victor Hernandez announced his run for re-election Friday amid the possibility of being recalled by voters next month.
"Well. the biggest challenge in this recall and the election is the wording on the ballot itself, and the confusion it's creating,"

Hernandez said there is some campaigning going on that could confuse his supporters. Namely, signs that read, 'Vote for Victor Hernandez Recall'. He said it is the way it is worded that makes the message a bit fuzzy.

"My opposition is intentionally misleading the public, and putting out signs, 'Vote for Victor Hernandez'," He said. "So, I think they are intentionally misleading the public, and they are doing it with the hopes that some folks who go vote for me, will actually mark the wrong box on the ballot."

"This is the language of the ballot. We didn't pick this language intentionally," Ysidro Gutierrez, who organized the recall petition against Hernandez, said. "We used the language that was put together by the elections office and the state of Texas. So, this is the language of the ballot. This is the way it should be."

"It's unfortunate that he feels that way, however, he is entitled to his opinion," Frank Gutierrez, chairman of the campaign, said. "We, on the other hand, have the obligation to tell folks exactly where we stand on the issues. And again, it's for the people that signed the petition that we are doing this."

Hernandez said regardless of the outcome of the recall election, he will run for his position again in May. Meanwhile, Ysidro Gutierrez said if the recall fails, he will keep up the fight to unseat the councilman.

"I voted for Mr. Hernandez when he ran again for District One city councilman, because he promised that he was a changed man, that he would abandon his old ways," Gutierrez said, "and it turns out that he is not a changed man. He went right back to the old Victor, of being a divider and not a uniter."

If the recall is successful next month, there will be a special election, most likely in December, to fill the empty seat.
