A passenger is dead and two drivers remain hospitalized following a head-on collision Sunday night. The crash happened along the Slaton highway southeast of Loop 289.Police report a pickup truck going the wrong way and an oncoming car swerved in the same direction to try to avoid hitting each other and instead collided in the median.
The driver of the pickup, 35-year-old José Marmolejo of Slaton, and the driver of the car, 26-year-old Jonathan Runnels of Pasadena, are both in critical condition at last report.
Runnels' backseat passenger, 27-year-old Laura Botkin of Houston, died at the hospital. Police report she was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected.
