Testimony began Wednesday in a Lubbock murder trial.
Steve Ballesteros, 43, is accused of killing his girlfriend, 32-year-old Maria Priscilla Perez, last year.
According to police reports, Ballesteros told detectives he suspected Perez was cheating on him, and choked her to death in the bedroom of her duplex in April 2012. He left her body, and her four children, in the home.
Police reported Ballesteros returned to the scene of the crime and taunted them. After a short chase, he was apprehended.
Witnesses called to testify on behalf of the prosecution included the maintenance technician for the apartments, who called police after the children asked him for help and led him to the crime scene.
Defense attorneys argues the murder was a crime of passion, and that Ballesteros "snapped" after suspecting Perez had been unfaithful.
