The City of Lubbock renamed the section of the city cemetery commonly known as Carver Heights on Saturday to Vivian T Cooke Memorial Baby Land.
The late Cooke was honored for both her art and educational contributions to the community. Cooke was an educator at Lubbock ISD for 35 years. She served as a mentor to children as well.
Daughter Jaqee Cooke-Dean said her mother was an example on the homestead.
"She let me find my own way. She provided support and guidance, but it was always very clear that we were expected to be committed to whatever it was we were doing," Cooke-Dean said. "And she demonstrated that on her journey as an artist. She was committed to her art, her family and her community."
Former colleagues, students and acquaintenances were present at the dedication.
