An email and phone scam are targeting residents in Lea County and some other parts of New Mexico.

Sheriff's deputies said scammers are posing as someone from their office telling residents they have a failure to appear warrant for their arrest, which is usually for failing to appear for jury duty.

Law enforcement agencies do not contact residents or attempt to arrange payments for any violations over the phone or email. The suspects in the scam have used names as Lieutenant Martin, Sergeant Truett, and other aliases. They claim to be from the warrants or civil process divisions.

If you receive this call, contact your local law enforcement office.
