A late night shooting at a local motel left a man dead and a woman critically injured. It happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Budget Motel on 34th and Avenue G.

According to LPD Captain Jonathan Caspell, police responded to a domestic disturbance where Pedro Esteban Hernandez, 44, and Brenda Sue Caudillo, 44, were heard arguing inside. Caspell's report says Hernandez shot Caudillo multiple times. She fled the hotel room and cried for help.

Hernandez then fatally shot himself in the room before police arrived.

Caspell said domestic violence calls are often the most dangerous.

"There's a lot of emotion that tends to go with these type of cases, they tend to be very dangerous, not for officers, but for the people involved, especially when there's this much emotion involved." Caspell said. "The best thing is to bring in law enforcement officials with hopefully some cooler heads, come in and hopefully bring peace to the situation."

Hernandez was pronounced dead by EMS at the scene.

Police say Caudillo is listed in critical condition at University Medical Center.
