New Deal High School exceeded expectations this year.

Students in the band will attend their first University Interscholastic League state competition. The competition will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio Monday Nov. 4.

"Well, it's just something that raises the whole community and the whole school up," Band Director James Nance said. "This is the first time in school history that the band has been at state marching contest. It has just been a tremendous ride this week. Everybody is just so excited for the band to be going down there."

The entire Nance family will be taking part in the competition. Kay Nance, James' wife, is a co-director of the band, the couple's oldest son, Robert, conducts the drumline, and their youngest son, Jacob, will play a solo on the saxophone.
