A man is dead after a house fire in northeast Lubbock. Neighbors reported the blaze in the 1500 Block of North Wood around 7 p.m.

Fire crews from Lubbock and Idalou battled the flames. LFD Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Loveless said the man was airlifted to a hospital where he died.

Firefighters found 87-year-old Frutoso Perez Garcia inside his home in the 15-hundred block of North Wood.

Preliminary autopsy findings indicate he died of smoke inhalation. Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Loveless said the blaze started in a utility area where some clothes near a gas water heater caught fire. Loveless said there were no smoke detectors in the home.
