A Lubbock dachshund in the running for a national title.

Ruddiger and his owners Kevin Isom and Joanie Reecer travel to San Diego this week for the 17th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener National race.

This canine is one of nine regional finalists from across the country competing for the title of Fastest Wiener in the West. Isom says he's as surprised as anyone that his pet has championship potential.

"We took him to the race just kind of as a joke, just, i mean because there's a whole lot of wiener dogs gathered in one spot so it's real neat to just go down there and see that many wiener dogs together," Isom said. "We really did not think he was going to win at all. So this was kind of just a really lucky deal. So he hasn't trained for this at all. He's a pretty lazy guy."

The winner of Thursday's race receives a $1,000 dollar prize and will be honored at halftime during the Holiday Bowl.
