It has been quite the race to the finish line. From Republican primary to runoff to a recount, then a court date and another runoff, R.C. Cheek is the Republican candidate for Hockley County Sheriff.
Only a single vote separated Cheek from Interim Sheriff Paul Scarborough in the first runoff and subsequent recount.
After Cheek filed a court challenge, both parties agreed to a new runoff which was held Tuesday.
Cheek was named the winner by more than 400 votes.
Cheek's attorney, James Palomo, said his client is excited to be moving forward.
"Even if he had lost this new election, he still would have been happy, just because, he fought the process, or not fought the process, but he fought the past election the right way through the court system, and he was just happy to get a new election in and of itself," Palomo said.
Cheek will face former sheriff and Libertarian candidate David Kinney in the November general election.
