Texas Tech has a new coach and renovated stadium, now they are topping it off with a new horse named Woody.
Midnight Matador was retired last fall due to health issues.
Sam Jackson M.D., a member of the Masked Rider Advisory Committee, decided which horse would take the reins.
Stephanie Rhode, Texas Tech Director of Spirit Programs, said the decision came down to finding a horse who could be calm and quiet in a football stadium.
"When you go to one of our football games we have banging bertha, we have shotguns, we have fire work, we have flags, we have a football team obviously, cheerleaders, pom squad members, the going band," Rhode said. "And so it's a lot for a horse to handle."
Woody made his first appearance at the Meineke Car Care Bowl on December 28, but will make his first known crowd appearance during baseball season.
With his first appearance Tech is looking to give Woody a more spirited name. The traditional contest to name Woody is under way and you can submit your ideas until March 1. that website is here
