Mid-afternoon Wednesday Lubbock police responded to a report of a suspicious death in Lubbock's Tanglewood neighborhood.
"Upon arrival officers did locate a deceased person at the residence,” said Lubbock Police Sergeant, Jonathan Stewart. “That person has been identified as Joseph Sonnier, a 52-year-old male. The death is considered suspicious at this time and is being investigated as a homicide."
Joseph Sonnier was the Medical Director of Pathology with Covenant Health System. A neighbor who works at Covenant said he did not show up this morning. Co-workers worried after not being able to reach him.
Sonnier's body was found inside his home in the 4600 block of 21st Street by landscape workers.
Those landscapers noticed a broken window and called police. Sonnier lived alone and often had help over at his home.
Neighbors said a home and a few cars across the street have been broken into in the past few months. You can see each home on the block has security cameras. Police are looking into whether anyone captured video that might offer clues.
"There hadn't been anything to indicate any extensive problems in the neighborhood,” Sergeant Stewart said. “I wouldn't express any concern for the neighbors at this time."
Covenant released the following statement upon hearing about Sonnier's death:
"The entire Covenant family is deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Joe Sonnier. He was loved by our staff, physicians and all who he encountered every day. Dr. Sonnier joined the Covenant staff in 2006. He served in leadership positions at Covenant such as section chief of pathology and most recently served as medical director of the pathology department. He was a tremendous supporter of the Covenant Foundation, March of Dimes and many other charities. Many lives were touched and brightened by his presence. Our prayers are with his family and friends."
Police have not released any information on a possible weapon or cause of death.
