Despite support from most council members, a requested zoning change to allow a Dollar General store to be built failed.
Due to the number of neighboring landowners who expressed opposition in writing, six votes were needed to change the property at 4011 East 4th Street from residential to commercial. The vote was five to two, with Mayor Glen Robertson and Councilman Todd Klein opposed.
"I commend all those that are very solidly behind the desire to see more economic development in that area," Councilman Klein said. "I consider myself one of them. At the same time, you've got to balance the right of local property owners to have that kind of control locally."
That land is in Councilman Floyd Price's district.
