Heating and cooling your home can take a 43 percent bite from your monthly utility bill.

Hot Texas summers can ramp cooling costs up. Mark Branscome with Lowery Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning offered some tricks to keep the expense down.

  • Check your AC filters and change them about every 30 days. The box may say every 90 days, but the dirt and dust in West Texas causes them to wear out much faster.
  • Seal and insulate your windows.
  • Utilize programmable thermostats to enhance AC efficiency.
