The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board could add some enforcement requirements to a longtime law allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition.
Currently those students must promise to apply for legal status as a condition of receiving the benefit. In January the coordinating board will consider a proposal that includes requiring colleges and universities to follow-up with those students.
Jim Burkhalter, Vice President of Enrollment Management said 39 illegal immigrant students used the in-state tuition benefit at Texas Tech last year.
"I don't think it will be very tough for us to comply with," he said. "Basically we will identify these students and at least communicate with them at least once a year about their status."
The law has been in effect since 2001.
