Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies said the man who lead them on a high-speed chase and into a standoff is an attempted murder suspect from Hale County.

Deputies were attempting to serve the warrant on Michael Atkins Thursday afternoon when he resisted arrest and took off in a convertible. Atkins is accused of a stabbing a Petersburg man Wednesday. That man is still in the hospital.

The deputies pursued him south on FM 400. Further down the road, law enforcement set up spikes to try and stop the car, but the suspect managed to get around them.

The chase lasted about 30 minutes until deputies say Atkins wrecked the vehicle and bailed about a quarter of a mile north of Highway 6282. That put him in Lubbock county just north of Idalou.

"Probably the most excitement we have had out in the country," Michael Howe, neighbor said. "I saw him coming this direction on 400, I saw him just swerve right into the ditch, and leap right over."

The suspect managed to make it to a house and barricade himself inside. A standoff ensued for about 45 minutes, with the LSO SWAT team and negotiators responding to the scene. He taunted police, they said he stood drinking liquor on the porch.

Then he went back inside, but right as a SWAT team threw a flash grenade into the home. The team made its way in and tasered Atkins who was then taken taken UMC.

"Anytime somebody is tased, the little nubs that get embedded into the body have to be taken out, by the hospital," David Turner with the Lubbock County Sheriff's office said.

Besides facing an attempted capital murder charge. Atkins is now facing a slew of additional charges, including evading arrest.
