The Dawson County Sheriff's office is investigating human remains that were discovered Saturday.
According to a news release, at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, the Dawson County Sheriff's office received a call from a local resident stating he had found what he believed to be human remains.
The remains were found across the road from his land in Western Dawson County and were confirmed to be human by officers of the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.
A death investigation was started at the time with assistance from the Texas Rangers and a forensic anthropologist.
According to the news release, a shallow grave was located at the scene and a Dawson County Justice of the Peace conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy in Lubbock.
At this time, according to the news release, the age, sex or race of the individual and the time frame the body had been at the location are unknown.
More information may be disclosed pending the autopsy results. No further information was provided.
