In some instances, a life change for the better can be sparked by a painful and devastating event. That was the case for Wes Everett.

Unveiling a shiny new plaque bearing his father's name, Everett has come a long way, working to help the Covenant Heart Health Center over the last couple of years. Everett's father passed away due to heart disease a few years ago, and since then, he's been trying his best to stay in shape and live a healthier life. Everett trains for triathalons, and through his races, he's managed to raise tens of thousands of dollars for a new cardiac catheterization lab. He said he doesn't want his children to suffer the same loss he did as a young adult.

"Anything can help," Everett said. "Even the smallest change in your lifestyle is going to help you and make you healthier. For me, I never felt overweight or out of shape, but really I didn't know. Sometimes it's not about you, it's about the people you love. Sometimes you just have to be a better person for them instead of for yourself."

Through Everett's efforts and other generous community donations, Covenant Health was able to show off the new "cath lab" equipment Monday. Upgrades include the latest imaging capabilities, allowing doctors to see what's going on inside a patient's heart during a procedure with extreme clarity.

Dr. Paul Walker said special attention was also paid to updating the family waiting area.

"So that really enhances the comfort level of the patient's family whenever they're waiting to see the outcome when their loved one is going through a heart procedure, or even going through a procedure for a heart attack," Walker said.

The Heart Health Center has been around since the early 70's. More than $800,000 was raised for the updates.
