Investigators are trying to identify badly decomposed human remains found in Scurry County Saturday afternoon.
According to the Department of Public Safety, they were near lake J.B Thomas. DPS Trooper Sparky Dean said the remains were too decomposed for gender to be determined. They'll be sent to the medical examiner in either Lubbock or Ft. Worth for autopsy. Dean said they could take anywhere from days to weeks to identify. Investigators right now are trying to preserve the scene and are not releasing any other details.
Speculation is circulating the remains are those of Hailey Dunn, who went missing from Colorado City in December 2010. Her parents went to Snyder Monday, according to a group called "Hope for Hailey", which is dedicated to finding the teenager. On the night after Christmas in 2010, Dunn had told her mother she was going to spend the night with a friend. She hasn't been seen since.
That story has taken several turns. Shawn Adkins, boyfriend of Hailey's mother, was questioned in the case. Later, her mother Billie Dunn was arrested and pled guilty to hindering apprehension, filing a false police report and possession of drugs. She served a year probation.
Coincidentally, this time last year, remains were found in Big Spring, less than one mile from where Dunn went missing. Similar speculation surfaced, but it was determined the remains were not those of Dunn.
