Construction has officially started on the new Alamo Drafthouse theater in Lubbock.
The eight-screen theater is the anchor for a new shopping center at north Slide and North Loop 289. The plans to bring Alamo Drafthouse to Lubbock have been in the works since 2009. The theater chain prides itself on a great menu and drinks delivered right to your theater seat, while you watch first-run movies and independent films. There is an emphasis on special screenings.
"We always do bring in independent films when we can," Neil Billingsley-Michaelsen, with the Alamo Drafthouse, said. "We sort of narrow our releases, art films. We, actually, in our Houston locations, do a lot with local film makers and get them screened. So, it is really trying to expand the cinema experience for everybody while delivering what everybody wants to see in terms of blockbusters."
Our own James Eppler was honored to be invited to be among the community members who put their hands in concrete and wrote a message that will be displayed as part of the building.
The theater is set to open in the spring of 2014.
