A grandmother and her grandchild were killed in a wreck Monday morning on U.S. 84 near Anton, northwest of Lubbock.

Sergeant Bryan Witt with the Texas Department of Public Safety tells us Jeffrey Howard, 51 of Wolforth, was headed west in the eastbound lane of the highway in an SUV, crashed into a vehicle driven by Patricia Mendez, 62 of Anton, who had her 8-year-old granddaughter Ava McWhirter, as a passenger. The SUV caught fire and is burned beyond recognition.

"At this time, we know that we have two deceased. The vehicle that was headed westbound, one female and one child. The  driver of the vehicle that was driving on the wrong side of the roadway has been airlifted to UMC with critical injuries," Sgt. Witt said.

We're told law enforcement received multiple calls of the wrong-way driver before the crash. Troopers are still investigating the fatal wreck. DPS reports excessive speed is most likely a factor.
