Shortly after 6 p.m., a former Texas Tech graduate student convicted of a double murder 12 years ago was executed.

Vaughn Ross was strapped to a gurney in Huntsville's Wall's Unit and given a lethal injection.

Ross was convicted for the fatal shootings of an 18-year-old friend of his girlfriend and an associate dean at the Tech library.

The bodies of 53-year-old Douglas Birdsall and Viola McVade were found in Birdsall's car in a ravine near Canyon Lake Six.

Ross was studying for his doctorate in architecture at Texas Tech when he committed the slayings.

Ross had been feuding with McVade and Birdsall, according to investigators, was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The 41-year-old Ross was the 10th Texas inmate executed this year.
