Texas Tech regents have named Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., as the interim president of the university. Schovanec is presently Dean of the university's College of Arts & Sciences. He will replaces the outgoing Guy Bailey.

Bailey is leaving Tech to become president of his alma mater, the University of Alabama. The announcement comes during a meeting of the Board of Regents in El Paso. During executive session members worked out details of Schovanec's contract.

Chancellor Kent Hance told us in July a search committee will take some time to find a permanent president.

"The last search we had was very fast," Hance said. "It went five months, and that is unheard of. I would say we would push this, but it certainly might be six to nine months."

In a written statement from the University Hance today said, “Dr. Schovanec has 30 years of dedicated service at Texas Tech. He knows our university well and has done an outstanding job as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. I am confident Dr. Schovanec will lead with enthusiasm and integrity in this role.”

Schovanec became dean of the College of Arts & Sciences in June 2010. He'll begin duties as interim president in early September. Bailey begins his tenure at Alabama at the beginning of September.

A profile of Schovanec from the university website follows:

Professor Lawrence Schovanec earned his doctorate in mathematics from Indiana University, his master’s degree from Texas A&M University and his bachelor’s of science degree from Phillips University. His research deals with the fields of biomechanical and physiological control systems and solid mechanics, in which he has more than 50 publications.

He has received more than $2.1 million in external funding for his research and has spoken extensively at conferences and other professional venues. He has received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy.
