Steven Jones, the husband of Lubbock County Commissioner Patti Jones, was killed late this morning in an industrial accident on farmland in far north Lubbock. Jones was doing welding work on a piece of equipment near Kent Street and far north University Avenue when a jack holding up the welding trailer gave way with him underneath.
A close colleague of Jones commented on the loss of a man who had a strong belief in volunteer work, and great pride in agriculture.
"He was not only helpful to us, but did a lot of things to help other producers," Mark Brown, with the Texas Agrilife Extension Service for Lubbock, said. "He worked on farm result demonstration trials testing new varieties, he was on the Lubbock Farm Bureau, and served on the Boll Weevil Eradication Program. When his kids were in 4-H, he served on the Junior Livestock Committee and was also on the board of Lubbock County Agriculture Committee."
Jones was a cotton producer here in Lubbock County. He was working on his land when the accident occurred.
