It's a difficult time of year for the South Plains Food Bank. The shelves are harder to fill.
The Food Bank will kick off its annual Summer of Sharing food drive to battle the drought it usually experience in the summer months. It starts on Memorial Day Monday with a 5k and 1 mile fun run at McKenzie Park.
There is no entry fee to the race, although participants are encouraged to make a donation of a sack of nonperishable food items. There are numerous other giving opportunities throughout the summer.
Sterling Shumway of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and other local organizations have helped make the fourth annual Summer of Sharing happen.
"This is a community effort to help feed those in need in this community." Shumway said. "We hope that you'll come out and join us, that neighbors and friends and others will come out and participate in the activities."
The Food Bank's goal is to secure three 300,000 pounds of food during this year's Summer of Sharing.
