When a family is hospitalized you want to be as close as possible. This is the purpose of Covenant's sleep rooms, to keep family members close to their patient, in comfortable accommodations.

Janice Shugart and Dale Kayler's father was flown to Covenant early Monday morning from Carlsbad. He has hemophilia. It's a 200-mile trip and a lengthy hotel stay without the hospital's help.

"We like being in the hospital where we can just go over and see him if we need to, or any time we want to and not drive," says Shugart.

The sleep room is convenient in more ways than one says Holly Kennedy, spokesperson for the hospital.

"Rooms are $25 a night and, even with hotels who offer discounts to families with loved ones taken care of in our health care system, it can still add up really quickly," says Kennedy.

Shugart says it's perfect for the family to move fast.

"We could get a call in the middle of the night saying 'get to the hospital', and so now we can just go over there."

The sleep rooms are like a hotel in the hospital -- private bathrooms with shower, two beds and a kitchen is available.

"We also have a laundry room so that if they are here for an extended period of time they can do their laundry," says Kennedy.

Now that Janice and Dale are well taken care of they can devote their full energies to their dad during his time of need.
