Zachry Engineering is expanding Lubbock's stake in wind energy. It is now operating out of hangar space and offices at Reese Center. This firm is contracting with the Antelope Station in Abernathy and will also perform operatational services for wind generation owners across the United States.

Michael Lake, High Voltage General Manager for Zachry Engineering, said the project represents a small part of their overall engagement efforts in wind generation.

"You have all these wind farms in and around Texas and what you have to do is, you have to balance that load and so you don't want to rely on the wind. You want to rely on mechanical technology, a gas engine and in this case, a natural gas engine that can start up quick and produce a lot of power, a lot of energy very quickly," Lake said.

Zachry's involvement with the Abernathy project includes providing quick baseload capacity when wind power production declines. Zachry has been leasing space from Reese since April and the project is set to go online next summer.
