A 20-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday night following a collision with an SUV at the intersection of North Slide Road and Northwest Loop 289. The rider's name has not been released, pending notification of family.

Police Captain Roy Bassett said the collision was likely caused by the rider's high rate of speed as he passed southbound under the Loop overpass. He said the rider was stopped at the traffic signal just north of the overpass, and when the signal turned green, he took off at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, according to Bassett, a Mitsubishi Outlander was entering the intersection on the eastbound frontage road under a green light. He said due to the motorcyclist's high rate of speed, he crashed into the driver-side door of the SUV.

The rider was rushed to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Bassett said no criminal charges are likely to be filed. As of midnight, LPD accident investigators were at the scene and southbound lanes were closed.
