A major agriculture company is expanding its reach in Lubbock.
Monsanto debuted its new cotton breeding facility Tuesday.
The mega-site is a major investment for Monsanto, and could have long term returns for Lubbock and the South Plains.
Kendall Bonds says researchers will focus on improving High Plains cotton and cotton production.
"We have five different research groups that are going to be housed here to focus on West Texas cotton, and how we can make it better. How are we gonna make it yield better, how are we gonna improve fiber quality? Water use efficiency, we've talked about, all those kinda things. But we're excited to be part of the community here in Lubbock."
In addition to the research groups, the facility will also house an environmental safety and health team focusing on employee and producer safety in the fields, and around heavy equipment.
