A Lubbock father charged with causing serious injury to his daughter last month asked the judge for a lower bond amount during a hearing Wednesday.

According to the arrest warrant, 27-year-old Johnny Julian Herrera was taken into custody after his 16-month-old daughter was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury. She also had what appeared to be a bite mark on one cheek and several bruises.

Herrera's attorney asked District Judge Jim Bob Darnell to lower Herrera's bond from $500,000 to $50,000.

A Lubbock Police Department detective testified Herrera told him that he placed the child on a counter and she fell off, then gave two other different explanations for how the child got hurt.

Judge Darnell is expected to rule on the bond reduction request next week.
