The Supreme Court has agreed to consider new limits on the contentious issue of affirmative action programs. The challenge from a white student who was denied admission to the University of Texas will be the high court's first look at affirmative action in higher education since its 2003 decision endorsing the use of race as a factor.Ethan Logan, Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Texas Tech, notes they do not have the same criteria and limitations that UT does.
“Our decision-making is based more on an opportunity for admission to public institutions of higher education and it's not necessarily restricted by capacity,” Logan said. “Our challenge is to make sure that we uphold a standard of admission and that once a student meets that minimum standard of admission then we admit all those students who meet those criteria.”
Logan said one question driving the higher education affirmative action issue before the Supreme Court is how to quantify expectations for diversity.
