Lubbock State Senator Robert Duncan says a new voter identification bill has wide-ranging public support.
Testimony on the legislation is expected to begin in the senate Tuesday.
The bill requires voters to show one official photo i-d.
The proposal allows the state to provide a photo i-d card for anyone who can't afford one. Ballots cast by voters without a photo i-d would be counted as provisional until the voter presents a photo i-d.
Senator Robert Duncan said past reports of incidents of fraud show the obvious vulnerabilities need to be addressed. "It will cut down on the persons scheming and coming up with methods to bypass the voting system which is very easy to do ounder the current voter registration card system that we have," said Senator Duncan.
Governor Rick Perry gave the measure emergency legislation status last week.
Some democrats are asking for more time to muster opponents.
Democrats blocked legislation on this issue in 2009.
