Lubbock residents react poorly to proposed Social Security changes
Demonstrations took place nationwide Tuesday against the proposal to change the way social security benefits are calculated. Congressional Republicans and President Obama have endorsed tying social security and other federal benefits to a version of the consumer price index that presumes recipients will do comparison shopping.
Opponents argue most retirees aren't able to do comparison shopping for expensive medical procedures and other cost-of-living adjustments. In Lubbock, most beneficiaries said social security should be left untouched.
"I think social security should be left alone and give the elderly more money than what they're getting right now."
"Social security has been around for many years. and people have worked real hard for it and it should be left alone."
The Congressional Budget Office projected that the chained CPI would cut the federal deficit by about $340 billion over the next ten years.
