One Lubbock resident celebrated a milestone birthday. Vollie Blanton of Lubbock turned 100 and on Saturday her family held a birthday celebration for her at the Greater Saint Luke's Baptist church.
The Blanton family was the first African American family to settle in Lubbock. Blanton said she is most proud of the person she strived to become.
" I'm glad that I've lived a life that everybody loves me, " Blanton said. " I tried all my life to live where I could be loved."
Her niece, Rahima Lateef, said her aunt's best trait is that she's funny.
"She has a great sense of humor and the great thing about her sense of humore is that she's laughing at herself," Lateef said. "She doesn't have a mean sense of humor, she just laughs at herself. She can make fun of herself."
Vollie enjoyed visiting with more than 30 relatives who took part in the celebration.
