A Lubbock Red Cross volunteer returned home this week after spending more than a week in Arizona, assisting those affected by the massive wildfires.

Phoenix Lundstrom was deployed to Yarnell, Az. on July 4.

She said she spent her time in Arizona providing water, food, and emotional support to displaced residents, many coping with the death of 19 firefighters.

"I had to surrender myself to the grief," she said, "the grief that this entire community was feeling."

Lundstrom said her and the other Red Cross volunteers were emotionally involved during their time in Arizona.

"It's impossible, I think, for anybody to experience, even on the outside of the community the loss of 19 firefighters without being affected," Lundstrom said, "deeply affected. I cried my way through the time that I was there, and I'm not a crier."
