Funeral services have been set for former Lubbock ISD Trustee Joan Ervin. She died Wednesday at the age of 80.
Ervin was the city's first African-American elected official, she served on the Lubbock ISD board from 1970 to 1978.
Eric Strong, Director of the Roots Historical Arts Council, said Ervin was active on many boards and commissions, and was honored often for her community service.
"This community is going to miss her probably more than what we'll ever know," Strong said. "What I would credit to her will is she had a lot of determination."
Funeral services for Ervin will be held Wednesday, September 26th at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 to 6 at Griffin Mortuary.
