An outgoing city council member is leaving his supporters with more than just words of thanks. Jim Gilbreath is not seeking re-election to district 6. He's sending letters to his past campaign contributors along with a refund check."It's their money and they have entrusted it to me to run a city council campaign and we've done that,” Gilbreath said. “I don't want to be presumptuous and think that I know where they would want me spending their money."
Gilbreath was able to build up a "war chest" in 2003 and the extra campaign funds are now distributed pro-rata.
Contributor Alan Henry said this is a hallmark of the man who's been a good steward of taxpayer's money.
"Anytime you open a letter and it's got money in it, it's a very good time,” Henry said. “I'm not at all surprised at Jim. He always does what needs to be done at the right time. That’s what exactly he did here."
In the letter, Gilbreath said he hopes that those receiving their money back would consider contributing it to other candidates who offer themselves up for public service.
