Lubbock County flood maps are getting an update. The revamped maps, which were published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, highlight areas of varying levels of flood risk. They're intended to help property owners determine whether they should consider getting flood insurance.

The revisions show a number of areas which have reduced the risk. They include playa lake areas along South Loop 289 from McAlister Park to Clapp Park, which benefitted from the South Central Drainage Project.

Only a few areas  show slight increases in flood danger.

The maps will become effective in January 2013. To see the maps click here.
