Two dozen people were evacuated from their apartments Saturday night.

According to the Lubbock Fire Department, a pickup ran over the gas meter for the Park South Apartments in the 5500 block of 49th Street, around 9:30.

The smell of natural gas prompted calls to 9-1-1.

Atmos energy was called out to shut off the line.

In the meantime, several residents sat it out in a citybus parked nearby.

Deputy Fire Chief Chris Angerer said it took about four hours, and residents were able to go back inside. Thankfully, the heat in the units is electric.
