This Spelling Bee is about teaching kiddos how to spell in Spanish. Lubbock ISD, with the help of a Texas Tech Honor Society, and other organizations put student's Spanish skills to the test.
Forty-five students from nine different LISD schools, grades 3rd-to-8th participated in the Second Annual Lubbock Spanish Spelling Bee Championship.
Comfort Pratt with Tech said the earlier students start working on their Spanish skills, the better off they'll be.
"Research has shown that when children speak multiple languages, they do better, because they learn different systems of languages, and they are able to apply grammar better, and they are also able to relate better to people from different places," she said. "The culture goes with the language." "When they are learning the language, they learn the culture, so they are learning a lot of things at the same time." "If we can help them maintain the language when they come up, we will not need translators."
The winner will now compete in a regional spelling bee.
