A major retailer at South Plains Mall was closed most of the day due to an isolated power outage.

JCPenny was the only Lubbock Power and Light customer affected by the problem. The fix was no small task. It involved removing a ten-ton transformer that failed, and replacing it.

"Most of those transformers were set when the mall was created and designed, and we didn't do that work," LP&L spokesman Chris Sims said. "So it's taken us a while to go through there and try to figure out how everything is wired, and then of course, set the new transformer."

LP&L crews completed the repairs by about 6 p.m.
