Lubbock's winningest high school girls' basketball coach has lost the battle to get her job back.

The LISD board denied a grievance initiated by former Coronado head coach Shirlene Hughes in June after she was reassigned as the district's assistant head golf coach and a teacher at Coronado.

Hughes' attorney said  Hughes will look to coach basketball elsewhere now.

"It should have been a basketball decision," said Hughes' attorney, Tiger Hanner. "It was instead based upon politics and who you go out and hang out with rather than how you do your job and what kind of success you have."

School Board President, James Arnold, said the Lady Mustangs program will move on.

"We're moving forward," said Arnold.  "And we're excited for what Coronado basketball's going to do this spring."

Hanner said Hughes has been on leave since the start of the school year and still is at this time.
