Jury selection is underway in a Lubbock murder trial, despite the defendant saying he wants to fire his defense attorney.
Steve Ballesteros, 43, is accused of killing his girlfriend, 32-year-old Maria Priscilla Perez last year.
After a brief hearing the judge ruled the trial would go on saying Ballesteros was purposefully not cooperating with his lawyer.
According to police reports, Ballesteros told detectives he suspected Perez was cheating on him and choked her to death in the bedroom of her duplex in April of 2012.
Police said the suspect returned to the scene of the crime while investigators were there and taunted them.
After a short chase, he was apprehended.
